Camp Directors

The Camp Oneka Administrative Team!

Johnny and Rachel Waszczak and Ali Hunter

Johnny and Rachel Waszczak are the Owners and Directors of Camp Oneka.

Growing up, Johnny attended sports camps, family camps, and went on camping adventures with his brother, sisters, mom, and dad.  He loved it all; friends, sports, games, campfires, campfire songs, and the great outdoors.  Pursuing his goal to teach and work with children and his passion for the outdoors, after his first year of university, he worked as a camp counselor at a traditoinal, overnight, Midwest summer camp (Camp Timberlane), and he knew that working with children in a camp setting was what he wanted to do with his life.  Over the next 11 years he worked successively as a counselor, activity instructor, rock climbing director, wilderness trip leader, village director, and year-round associate director at that camp.  He then moved on to be the director of a camp in Northeastern Pennsylvannia, later becoming the executive director of the 3 camp operation, where he spent 9 years.  He is active with the American Camp Association (ACA), has served on ACA committees, and he currently serves as an accreditation/standards visitor.  He also loves to help coach his two children’s softball and soccer teams.

Rachel has also loved and had a passion for summer camp and working with children.  As a child, she attended day camps and overnight camps, and still has great friends and memories from those formative years of her life.  She and Johnny worked together for over 10 years at Camp Timberlane, and for 9 more years in the Pocono Mountains (Camps Pine Forest, Timber Tops and Lake Owego simultaneously).  She has worked as a counselor, lifeguard, lifeguard instructor, camp nurse, health center coordinator, director, and executive director. She is a board member for the Association of Camp Nursing and speaks frequently at local and national camp conferences about health and safety.  She is also an active member of the American Camping Association and serves as an accreditation/standards visitor.  She has been a nurse for over 13 years serving as camp nurse, school nurse, rehabilitation nurse, a nurse in various hospital departments and, currently, as a labor and delivery nurse in Honesdale, PA.

Ali started as a camper at Oneka in 1992 and has spent more than 25 summers at Oneka.  She went through every phase of the Camp Oneka progression: junior camper, intermediate camper, senior camper, LC (camp's oldest campers and leadership group), Nekette (junior counselor), and counselor/activity instructor.  Over the years she has taken on (and perfected) nearly every role in camp, from waterfront director to program director, before becoming the assistant director in 2004.  In 2018 Ali took on the role of co-director and began to work with camp year round.  When she is not at camp or helping to prepare for the summer, Ali is a full time special education teacher at Harding Township School in New Vernon, NJ.  Ali brings a great deal of camp spirit and commitment to the Oneka traditions to the team, and helps these things to live on by sharing them with new and returning campers each summer and by staying closely connected with alumni and the camp community.
